How to Write Juicy Short-Story Introductions

The introduction for a short story should always be juicy...

It should give the reader enough incentive to go on. Oftentimes, the reader asks herself "What is in it for me?"

It is your job, as the writer, to answer that question. Whether or not she will proceed with reading your story depends on how well you answer that question.

How to Write Juicy Short-Story Introductions

The awful truth is that no matter how fabulous your story is, if your introduction is lame, your readers won't go further than the first few paragraphs. So it is definitely something you should not overlook.

A juicy introduction is one that...

captivates the mind of the reader. promises a lot of good things. witty, yes, but not too complex.

Check out the following introductory paragraph of a story:


Once upon a time, there lived a little boy whose name was Bill. He lived in a town called Happy Town. The town was full of happy people. His family was also a happy one. Their home was warm, cosy and happy. The school he went to was called Happy Days Primary School.

After reading this paragraph, how much enthusiasm do you have to go on reading? The very first sentence almost bored me to tears. "Once upon a time" used to be a very cool phrase in the past, but let's get real-it has become a mere cliche nowadays, and hardly anyone uses it anymore, unless, of course, you are into writing stories for very young children...

The phrase "Once upon a time" also suggests that what follows is extremely fictitious and quite off from reality. Modern short story writing has become more and more about realism and about the oft unresolved problems that face humanity. So if you write about issues that affect people-day to day issues that they wrestle with, I reckon that they will be more inclined to read...

True, fairy tales have their own allure, but life is anything but a fairy tale nowadays and unless someone is in the mood, they will just yawn and close the book. But if you promise something that is a bit more realistic, someone may read a few more paragraphs, or sentences.

A juicy introduction screams "read more!!!" and it is so subtly alluring that the reader will find herself reading more without even realizing it. If someone has to labour on to read your story, it is not good. They have all the reason to toss it aside and pick up their TV remotes. In today's hectic world, people are usually busy or tired, so why make it harder for them by using unnecessarily big words or complex language? Furthermore, with time becoming ever so precious, you must convince your readers that your story is worth reading and won't be a waste of their time. And you must do that in your first few sentences.

By all means, lay off the cliches and trite phrases. They will not win the reader's interest. Try witty expressions that leave readers hungering for more. Cleverly constructed sentences and phrases are hypnotising and people easily fall in love with them. How easy is it to hypnotise the reader with "Once upon a time?" unless you use real magic, maybe...

So let us juice things up a bit on our paragraph. Let's kick out the proverbial "Once upon a time."(Sorry if you have fallen in love with it, but it has to go...):


Bill Happy was a happy kid-a very happy kid indeed....

The question that is ringing in your head is probably: "What the heck was he so happy about?" So your automatic reaction will be to read the next sentence and find out. You get the secret now, don't you? Leave the reader hungering and thirsting for more; don't give out everything at once. Consider the introduction as the desert-whets people's appetite for the main meal, which in this case is the body of the story.

Now the paragraph get's even more interesting:


He had everything a kid his age would want-a wonderful, loving family; good friends; and he went to a happy little school called Happy Days Primary School. He lived in a happy town full of happy people. The neighbourhood he lived in was happy and peaceful. But above all, his home was happy and cosy.

At this point the reader is exclaiming: "Come on, there is no place on earth were people are so happy!" Ah, she is probably right, but hey, you aroused her interest. She really wants to know why these guys are so happy and so she reads on. And, wait for it...

Bingo! Your story is read!

Remember your most powerful weapon-the first sentence. Notice the following introductory sentences in LJ Kundananji's stories:


"She was everything that I dreamt of-everything." -Lost Dream

"Esnart and I had decided to rendezvous at the end of the corridor-the high way." -She stood waiting

"When he left, he left without saying goodbye-or at least not in the manner he should have."-Forgotten.

"There were five girls crowded in the little room."- Girl Power

"Lewis hurled a stone into the Gomer Lakes."- Can't Live Without you

All the above introductory sentences have one thing in common: they arouse curiosity. Who was she that was everything he dreamt of? For what purpose had they agreed to rendezvous? Why is this guy regretting not having said goodbye? Why are these five girls crowded in the little room? For what reason is Lewis hurling a stone into the Gomer lakes?

The only way that the reader can find out is to read more. By all means arouse curiosity, and more curiosity...

Do you see how powerful an introduction is? Do you? Good...then you are on your way to writing juicy introductions. If you do that, more people will read your stories, no matter how boring they are!!!

Rundll32.exe is an important process of your windows operating system. The process rundll32.exe executes dll files and puts their libraries into your system's memory. Without this process your computer would become instable and very slow.

How to Write a Book Using a Simple Template

There are many strategies to writing a book. You can sit down at your desk and just begin writing. This works well for very few people because at some point in the writing process - you could be halfway through the book before this happens - you are going to hit a roadblock and not know how to continue. Worse, you can lose track of your focus quite easily and go off on tangents that have absolutely no relevance with the rest of the chapter you are working on.

Another frequent writing approach is to jot down a few ideas, maybe even a list of chapters and their subject matter and to start writing. This can actually be worse than writing without any structure because you end up with very large chapters of more than 50 pages and then extremely small chapters of only a couple pages. That does not make sense and it does not result in a book that reads or flows well.

A better way to write your book, albeit still not the easiest way, is to draft an outline. I know, an outline feels too structured for many writers. Please bear with me. Writing an outline, a detailed outline, will not only help you organize your thoughts in a clear and concise manner, it will create a better book. Your book, when organized in an outline will be balanced. You would not have 50 page chapters and 5 page chapters, you will have equal chapters, they will all have a point, and you would not be as likely to go off on tangents.

Additionally, when you use an outline, your book will be written faster because you can approach it in a systematic way.

Now we are going to talk about the easiest approach to writing a book using a template or blueprint. The secret to this is that you are going to create much of the blueprint yourself. Why? Because only you know exactly what needs to be contained in your book. Here is the template part ready?

Remember the outline that we discussed? Go ahead and write that outline but make sure you have 1 chapter for every 10 pages of content. This means if you have a section you think will take 20 pages; find a way to break it into two parts. Now create 20 chapters if you want a 200 page book, 30 chapter titles if you want a 300 page book and so on. There is more...

Under each chapter title, you will want to create 10 points you want to express in your chapter. Each point will cover approximately one page, maybe a little more and maybe a little less but you will end up with 10 pages for each chapter.

Why does this work? It gives you a clear structure to write, so when you are not feeling up to it you really do not have any excuse to not get at least one page done. It also makes it really easy to write your book. Simply turn each point into a question, sit down and answer it. You will have your page written in less than five minutes... really! This means that if it takes you 5 minutes to write a page, you could write a chapter each day, right? That would mean you could have your 20 chapter book, your 200 page book, written in 20 days. Now that is fast and that is why using a template works so well.

Mass marketing success is contingent on economies of scale, production advantages and large budgets for penetrating a clamorous commercial environment. Large, established companies, think Procter & Gamble, Unilever, Rubbermaid, have all of the tools needed to launch products into this maelstrom. Most small entities and individuals do not.

Our preferred strategy is often to create a branding strategy based on exclusivity. When a product is sold in a limited distribution basis, available in select stores, and usually at a higher price than similar products, consumers tend to attach a higher perceived value to these items.

An Exclusivity Strategy Can Be Crucial to Successful Brand Marketing

There are numerous examples of exclusivity that can be used as a template when considering the proper strategy to utilize for a new consumer product launch. Retailers that sell high-end limited distribution products are very profitable and enjoy exceedingly high profiles. Bloomingdales, Tourneau, Neiman Marcus, Harvery Nichols, Harrod's, and Ralph Lauren are just a few of the stores that appeal to the "carriage trade". These stores seek goods of high quality, that can be priced at a premium, and that are not available from competitive outlets. This creates a loyal customer for the types of merchandise that can only be found in these doors.

Automobiles, jewelry, ready-to-wear, cosmetics, watches and home décor are only a few product categories where exclusivity is validated as a marketing and branding strategy.

Ferrarri, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Jaguar are world famous automobiles franchises. Ferrarri has created a worldwide thirst for these sleek, super fast, super priced sports cars with the "Prancing Horse" on the hood. There are only a handful of authorized Ferrarri dealers in the United States. Production is kept very small and all cars are typically sold two years before they are produced. This insures that value for used vehicles remains very high. Indeed, many old Ferrarri's appreciate in value, something that can be said of very automobile brands.

Rolex, Baume Mercier, Audemars Piguet, Chopard and Patek Phillippe are a smattering of the very expensive watch brands that are considered to be prized for their exclusivity, beauty, artisan craftsmanship and perceived value. They are sold in very few retail stores. The very fact that they are hard to find, expensive to buy and limited production makes each of these watches highly desirable.

Cosmetics houses at the highest end of the market differentiate themselves by limiting distribution to a select few stores in any given trading area. Clarins, La Prarie, Guerlain, Crème de la Mer, and Estee Lauder are very choosy about where their products are placed. This insures that consumers recognize that by their very lack of availability these products are special, and therefore, justify higher retail price points.

We look at hundreds of new products each year. A select few offer that unique blend of novel consumer features and performance benefits that insure success. A strategy we often use to launch such products is built on exclusivity, at least initially. It is very easy to "knock yourself off" and replicate high-end success with less expensive mass-market versions of your product. If you do not secure this space, competitors certainly will.

Alfred Sloan, the business and organizational genius that created General Motors in the 1920's, crafted the multi-price point strategy of offering something for everyone. Cadillac was exclusively for the rich. Buick and Oldsmobile were positioned for the middle class, older customers, seeking unobtrusive styling and soft rides. Pontiac was sportier and Chevrolet was the mass market, entry level brand. Sloan recognized that today's Chevy driver, as they prospered and aged, would move up the GM food chain.

Charles Revson adapted this multi-level channel distribution strategy with Revlon cosmetics. Etherea was his very exclusive carriage trade brand. Ultima II was for fine department stores. For broader distribution in general department stores and boutiques Revson sold his Revlon brand. These Revlon corporate lines were each differentiated by price point, packaging, product claims and performance. He offered something for every range of consumer.

There are a number of advantages to an exclusivity strategy. Typically initial inventory build out is mitigated, freeing up capital for sales promotion. Limited distribution means that the entrepreneur can be more attentive to each individual door carrying their items. Fewer doors can mean that product features and benefits can be demonstrated to individual consumers. This creates word of mouth and referrals. It minimizes the need for expensive media advertising. In-store merchandising is more manageable when distribution is limited. The opportunity to grow organically, the turtle approach; often enables the new company to establish a much more stable foundation from which to expand.

A type of exclusivity strategy can be constructed for products in virtually any category. From liquor, to beer, to hardware, to foodstuff, to lingerie, to pet products, the list goes on endlessly, there are opportunities to successfully commercialize ideas and make them successful using limited distribution techniques. This tried and true methodology is under-utilized, but often the best way to penetrate a very tough marketplace.

How to Write a Development Plan

Lots of people today want to become rounded in fields other than their own daily work. Get three bank sheets of paper or even better type, out your development plan on your computer following these easy steps:

With this at the head of your development plan you will never lose sight of what you want to accomplish and you will know exactly when you have achieved your goals.

Step 2: Write out what areas you have accomplished so far on your path to developing yourself. This will act like a barrier to keep your focus on what you have not accomplished as yet.

Step 3: Write out the areas you want to cover next; make sure you are not going over those areas that you wrote in step 2 above. Feel free to rewrite things from the second step if you want to refresh your memory on subjects that were done eons ago.

Step 4: Put the dates that you will meet your targets for each area that will be covered in the third step; this will help you focus on your goals.

Step 5: As you meet your goal that you have written in step 3, write next to them completed so you will know if you are applying adequate effort to reaching your targets, by the intended target dates you have laid out for yourself.

Article Writing Tips - How to Write an Opinion Piece

You know what they say about opinions. Everybody has one. And that's why writing an opinion piece can be an exercise in futility if it's not done correctly. You're probably thinking, "How can an opinion be correct or not correct?" It can't, but there are better ways to approach opinion pieces than others. In this article, I'm going to give you my opinion on what the best way is to write an opinion piece, based on my personal experience.

There is a lot of irony in this article, wouldn't you say? I'm giving you my opinion on writing opinion pieces. The key to this however, is that I am giving it based on my personal experience. Also, quite ironically, there is your answer in a nutshell...experience. It's hard to argue with somebody when they are speaking from experience. I've been writing for over 30 years and my best articles, at least the ones that got the most feedback, were the ones where I was writing from experience.

Okay, but what if you don't have personal experience with a subject? What if you're writing an opinion piece on whether the government should pass a certain law or not? Let's say the law had something to do with a certain type of crime, calling for stiffer penalties. If you've never broken the law, or been a victim of that crime, you can't speak from experience. So then what do you do? That's where you move onto the next best thing. Back up your opinion with some statistics.

Article Writing Tips - How to Write an Opinion Piece

For example, let's take that newly proposed law. Certainly there has to be some statistics that support the passing of the law. Seek them out and present them in your article. Give your opinion that the law should be passed and point out these statistics, whether it be people murdered, raped, robbed or whatever. By showing how the current law is not much of a deterrent, you make your case for the new, tougher law. It's not rocket science and it works very well.

When you give your opinion and back it up with either your personal experience or some solid facts, it's hard to go wrong with your article.

The reason is probably not what you think.

If you've been schooled on traditional copywriting, you know that in the offline world, the headline determines as much as 95% of the success of the book or article. This statistic takes into consideration what makes the book title successful: Whether a human buys it or not.

Article Writing on the Internet is a whole different story because of the way your articles reach humans who have an interest in them.

MYTH: Most people will read your articles because they came to a website and started browsing just like they do if they were to have gone to a local book store to find a book of personal interest.

FACT: Wrong! Most people will search the Internet using one of the major search engines and they will be putting in between 1 to 5 keywords that are related to the topic of the article or information they are looking to locate. The search engines will then deliver results that best match the human's interest.

YOUR GOAL: To have your articles show up in the search engine results for the keywords and topics that are most related to the content of your article.

HOW?

You must embrace this TITLE creation & traffic-building truth:

The first 3-5 words of your TITLE determine the success of your article in terms of how much traffic your article will generate back to your website. Success can only be had when you create keyword rich titles for your articles that match the most commonly searched keywords for your topic.

How to determine which keywords are rich and the right ones to use for your article?

You'll need a keyword research tool. Some are free and some are fee-based. Overture.com has a popular keyword research tool that shows you the most common search results from the Yahoo search engines directory. If you want to see what's on "Google's Mind" you can try one of their current beta tools called "Google Suggest":

Whether you use a web-based keyword research tool or invest in one of the more advanced application level software keyword research tools, it's critical that you learn know how to do keyword research.

A "Good" vs. "Bad" TITLE Example:

Here is an example of the difference between a non-keyword rich TITLE vs. a very keyword rich TITLE that is proven to perform better in terms of traffic creation:

Bad TITLE Example:

"Top 9 Ways You Can Acquire Fractional Jet Ownership"

Excellent Keyword Rich Title Example:

Fractional Jet Ownership - 9 Strategies to Help You Acquire Your Private Jet

Why is it more effective?

Because it does not waste the first 3 words of the title with meaningless garbage words like "top" or the number "9" or "ways"...and gets right to the important words that might be found when someone is using a search engine to research a topic related to your article.

You'll also notice in my example that I included the word "Private" Jet. Why? Because my keyword research said that people who search for fractional jet also search for the word "private jet" and therefore I wanted to boost the chances that my title would be found by a larger number of potential visitors to the article.

Two recommendations on what NOT to do:

1) Don't include garbage characters in your TITLE such as quotes, tildes, asterisks or anything else that a search engines has to work hard to discard in order to understand the TITLE of your article.

2) Do not engage in any search engine spam technique by having keyword rich TITLES that have nothing to do with the topic of your article. You'll only be hurting yourself as the search engines already aggressively filter out bad behavior like this.

What Is A Memorandum Or Memo?

A memorandum or memo for short is commonly understood to be an official document originating from an office. There are various types of memos. For example, in a business environment, the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Memorandum of Association (MOA), are common. A memorandum is written to communicate or convey a brief message on a given subject or topic. Apart from specific memos, two of which have been cited earlier, a memorandum is usually not more than one page.

A memorandum is generally made up of three parts. These being: Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Many office memos come in a standard and pre-approved format. The headings in a standard format are: To, From, Date, Subject and Reference. The memo may be addressed to an individual or a group of individuals. They are usually addressed by position or designation. Including a name and title if it is addressed to an individual is an accepted practice. Below the headings are the introduction, body and conclusion. In the introduction, the purpose or why the memo is being written and what would be focus of attention would be explained. The body will provide details of the subject such as what is the issue, what are the implications and other considerations including options. The conclusion will state what needs to be done, by whom and when. The memo needs be brief, to the point and clear. The general rule is one idea or issue per memo. If many ideas or issues need to be communicated, it would be better to call for a meeting or discussion. The target audience must be kept in sight. Key questions such as why the memo is being written, what needs to be conveyed and what is the expected outcome must be constantly kept in mind. This must be done before writing the memo, while it is being written and after it is completed. Be economical with words. Use simple language. Use the active voice. Use active verbs. The reader wants to read the document and move on to what needs to be done. Use the correct titles before the name such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., and so on.

After completing the memo, review it for accuracy, brevity and clarity. Read it out and check how it sounds or comes through. Check details such as date and address. These are important for ensuring that the message is delivered to the correct target audience and quickly. Additionally, it makes document control easier. Do not overlook the importance of correct spelling and grammar.
